A hypertrophic scar is a particular type of scar that forms when a wound heals and there is an overabundance of collagen in the affected area. These deposits of collagen make the scar raised in appearance instead of flat like certain other scars. You can tell a hypertrophic scar apart from other types of scars because hypertrophic scars are red and raised in appearance, in other words hypertrophic scars tend to stand out even more so than many other types of scars.

Hypertrophic scars have certain other characteristics, such scars tend to be itchy and can even cause pain after the wound that caused them is completely healed. Although hypertrophic scars can be less difficult to treat and manage than keloid scars, hypertrophic scars can become thicker and more raised as time goes on. Moreover, due to the nature of hypertrophic scars they can even restrict a person’s mobility depending upon where the scar is located. Simply put, hypertrophic scars are usually very difficult to live with, both because of their appearance and the physical side effects that can result from such scarring.

When it comes to scars there is no way to predict with complete accuracy what type of scar will form, however in general hypertrophic scars tend to result from cuts, burn, piercings, and even pimples. There is also evidence that hypertrophic scars develop more often when injuries and wounds go into the deeper layers of the dermis.

Options for hypertrophic scars can include surgical scar excision and laser scar therapy. However, in certain cases some scar treatment and management options may not be applicable or ideal for people with hypertrophic scars that contain nerves and blood vessels, something which is not at all uncommon when it comes to hypertrophic scarring.

Hypertrophic scar treatment and management can be a difficult endeavor because of the unique nature of hypertrophic scarring. People looking into hypertrophic scar removal need to be aware that even invasive treatment and management methods may not  get rid of all visible traces of scarring. Hypertrophic scars are usually uncomfortable and difficult to deal with, there is no reason to go to further trouble to help minimize the appearance of hypertrophic scarring.

Certain topical scar products on the market can be used to help reduce the look of hypertrophic scars, as well as many other types of scars from keloids to burn scars. Anyone living with hypertrophic scars knows that just because a wound has healed and scarred over, it does not mean that the pain and discomfort from that injury is over. It is both easy and painless to apply a scar product with 100% pure silicone’s to a hypertrophic scar, but the same cannot be said for more invasive approaches, such as surgical scar excision.

If you are living with an unwanted and unsightly hypertrophic scar, consider using a high quality scar gel or scar cream, preferably one that contains silicone’s in its formulation. You do not have to go through an expensive or painful procedure in order to feel better about the look of your scars.
